Cami has been tiny since birth. She was born (doctor insisted on inducing me for his own scheduling benefit) a week early at 6lbs 2oz. She had no health problems, other than a heart murmur, which we later learned was "Pulmonary Valve Stenosis." Her case wasn't so severe that she required surgery though, thank God. So I figured her being a (sort of) preemie, plus having a heart condition, she would always be small. That's how it appeared at every routine doctor visit. She was always in the 3-10 percentile.
Her doctor always seemed a little worried, but would say "You're small (um..NO) so it's probably just in her genes." However, around her 15month check..or somewhere along there, I honestly don't remember, Dr N said "she may be "Failure to Thrive" and you should see a nutritionist." I never did. I knew that I was feeding her healthy foods because I too eat healthy, but Cami just wouldn't eat. The lower parts of her eyes always looked black and sunk in. Her backbone and ribs protruded like a starved child's would. It broke my heart everyday. I constantly asked my step sister who is a nurse what I was doing wrong and she said "nothing..you can't do anything if she wont eat, maybe she needs a feeding tube put in her belly."
Oh.My.Gosh. I was terrified it was going to come to that! I didn't want to be in Children's Hospital with an active (at the time) 2 year old. No way would she have that and I wouldn't want to put her through it.
My worries continued. Every day that she got older, she looked sicker.. to me anyway. Everyone else insisted that that was just going to be her size and shape. I didn't believe them though. She is so much smaller than everyone else and always looked sick.
Fast forward to May when I started myself on the Gluten Free diet. I read numerous articles about Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance. One of the symptoms in children with Celiac Disease is "Failure to Thrive" and almost violent behavior. I thought *holy cow! what if this is affecting Cami?*
I told Chris about it and we decided to give it a try. Gluten Free is very very difficult with a 3 year old. She already had foods that she loved and didn't want to give them up. She cries for things all the time and it's SO hard not to give in.
We have had her on this diet for approximately a month. When I took her and Carrah to the doctor this week, she gained a POUND in a MONTH!!!!!!! Do you hear me people?!?! This is HUGE news!!! I know it sounds like a measly pound, but for us that is like TEN pounds! She has only gained a pound in a YEAR so for her to gain a pound in a MONTH, is amazing!! Even her doctor was surprised when I told her about the diet and how well Cami is responding. Her little belly is pooched out and full, I can no longer feel her backbone and no more black cirlces under her eyes!!!
PRAISE GOD!!!!!!!! My baby girl looks healthy for the first time since she was about 6 months old. :)
